About John Brooks

John Brooks is currently the Security Director for a Naval Installation near Memphis TN. In this role he has oversees Physical Security, Law Enforcement, Training, and Antiterrorism readiness. Prior to this role, Chief Brooks led the Ridgefield Police Department from 2016 to 2022. Before his role as Chief of police, he was a member of the Portland Police Bureau for 26 years where he served in every rank from officer to captain, working his way up through the organization. John began his law enforcement career in 1987 as a reserve police officer in Pullman, Washington while attending Washington State University. John maintains a long track record of community policing experience and innovative solutions. Leading through collaboration and inclusiveness, he has consistently worked to bring about change where needed and developed stronger relationships within government, the community, and area public safety stakeholders. John’s experience is best described as balanced and well-rounded. Operational, investigative, and administrative roles have provided him with the tools to view issues through several lenses while his ever increasing responsibility has helped to keep the “big picture” in mind. John has sat at both sides of the table in matters of labor and works tirelessly to bring people together based up common interests, goals and values. John enjoys engaging in the community he serves and has experienced both large and small populations and agencies.
