ABOUT JOHANNES JIANG

I am a PhD researcher and Project Manager (currently on leave of absence) under Professor Andreas Engert at the Freie Universität Berlin Empirical Legal Studies Center (FUELS).My interests lie in the interdisciplinary study of contracts and corporations across all major jurisdictions, with a special emphasis on theoretical and empirical law and economics. My PhD work is a game-theoretical account of appraisal claims as well as their procedural enforcement (a type of post-M&A litigation) in Germany, the EU, and the US.In my capacity as one of two Project Managers in the FUELS project „Germany, Inc.“, I lead a team of student assistants in creating a database with \"legal data\" on all German corporations listed on domestic stock exchanges at any point in time between the 1960s and 2024. Both my PhD thesis and the wider FUELS project are funded through grants from the German Research Foundation (DFG).I am currently also undertaking my legal traineeship at the Higher Regional Court (Kammergericht) in Berlin, as part of which I have spent time training with, among others, the corporate law and corporate governance unit at the German Federal Ministry of Justice as well as the mainstream corporate team of Professor Christoph Seibt at Freshfields Hamburg. I am currently sitting with the International Arbitration Group at Wilmer Hale London, and will presumably qualify as German Rechtsanwalt in mid-2026.I hold a law degree from the Humboldt University of Berlin (with Distinction), a Master of Laws with Distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science (with Distinction, Gleiss Lutz Scholar), and have been a Visiting Researcher at Harvard Law School (DAAD Scholar). I am a former participant (26th) and coach (28th) for the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court. Prior to pursuing my doctorate, I was a Research Assistant at international law firms Hengeler Mueller, Gleiss Lutz, and Noerr in Berlin and London. Apart from my academic writing, I have also made contributions on legal topics for news outlets including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. In my spare time I swim and gym, work towards a certificate in the history of art, and maintain my 600+ day streak in Italian on Duolingo.
