ABOUT JOHANNA KAO

With over 25 years of leadership in international political development, management of global organizations, and stakeholder engagement, I serve as the Senior Director for Asia-Pacific at a leading international non-profit organization. I have spent most of my career living and working across the Asia region and am currently based in Washington, DC, where I provide strategic oversight for strategy, program development and implementation, leading a team of 100+ professionals across 23 countries.A results-driven leader, I have a proven track record of building and managing diverse, high-performing teams and driving impact in complex political environments and markets. My expertise spans cross-sector and international partnerships, including building partnerships with senior government officials, corporate leaders and civil society organizations across the Asia-Pacific region.I bring deep experience in crisis management, political risk assessment, and strategic problem-solving across a range of legal and regulatory environments. Specializing in strategy, political analysis, institutional development, and governance, I have led major initiatives in post-conflict, transitional and closed societies. I have spearheaded major program assessments, institutional expansions and market entry, leading my organization’s successful entry into Timor-Leste, Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar at critical political junctures.I am recognized for my ability to navigate high-pressure, fast-paced environments while managing multiple priorities with precision. My leadership is grounded in cross-cultural collaboration, fostering trust among local and national government stakeholders, corporate partners, and civil society leaders to drive governance and institutional reform.
