SymPhysis Medical is a Galway-based medtech company transforming palliative care for people with late-stage cancer.
Around half of late-stage cancer patients develop malignant pleural effusion (MPE), a build-up of up to three litres of fluid in the chest that causes severe breathlessness, pain and distress. There has been no major innovation in its treatment in more than 25 years.
Our technology, releaze™, changes that. Less invasive to place than leading competitor devices and removable after 30 days, releaze™ is designed so patients can manage their own drainage at home, without nursing assistance. It restores independence and dignity at a time when every day at home matters.
The technology behind releaze™ is a platform for access to the pleural space, with potential applications across pleural care.
releaze™ was developed through a needs-based approach in close collaboration with clinicians, public health nurses, patients and carers, born out of clinical immersion on the BioInnovate Fellowship at the University of Galway. The company has raised over €5.6m to date, was recently awarded a $1.25m grant to establish a US base and won the MedTech Collaboration Award at the 2023 Irish MedTech Awards for its partnership with the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing. SymPhysis is targeting FDA clearance and a US market launch.
Founded in 2018 by CEO Tim Jones and Chief Scientific Officer Dr Michelle Tierney, SymPhysis Medical is part of Galway's globally recognised medtech cluster.
