ABOUT JOE MCCLEAN

I am a product and platform leader with 20+ years of experience guiding complex, mission-critical SaaS and enterprise systems from discovery through delivery. My career spans product management, product strategy, technical architecture, workflow design, and cross-functional leadership, culminating in my current role leading key higher education and research administration platforms at Duke University School of Medicine.I serve as the product owner for both of Duke’s IRB systems, including the Health System IRB (thousands of clinical studies) and the SBE IRB (~1,500 studies). I also oversee strategy and delivery for Duke’s enterprise biospecimen management system samples) and the Core Facilities Shared Resource Management platform, integrated with SAP to automate $10M+ in annual billing for 70+ research cores. My work includes defining multi-year product roadmaps, leading product discovery with investigators and administrators, shaping vendor product roadmaps, managing RFP and vendor selection, and collaborating with engineering, UX, compliance, finance, and IT leadership to deliver scalable SaaS solutions. I specialize in translating complex regulatory, scientific, and operational workflows into intuitive products that reduce administrative burden and improve researcher experience.Earlier roles at Verizon strengthened my foundation in technical solution design, process improvement, Lean Six Sigma, go-to-market readiness, and new product development—all of which influence my structured, data-driven approach to product leadership. As a leader, I emphasize coaching, clarity, and accountability, building trust and empowering teams through collaboration and continuous improvement.I’m now seeking Director of Product Management opportunities where I can lead product strategy across multiple product lines, mentor product managers, and deliver impactful higher ed SaaS solutions that advance research and academic operations.
