ABOUT JOEL SLOSS
It’s time for an update.[Winter ’26 Edition]Nearly all of us here are in very turbulent times; technological changes occur faster than most people predicted and certainly faster than many were prepared to handle. I was caught in the first seismic wave of post-pandemic workforce culling at the start of 2023, and it feels like the crest still hasn’t arrived. But ya just gotta keep on keepin’ on.What remains is that I exist at a strange crossroad between creating and regulating. The media and entertainment industry is—please forgive the marketing-speak—undergoing more change now than at perhaps any other time in its history. Even security and governance, which you might see as static and boring, is continuously being pushed to its breaking point by the same technologies it is meant to protect. AI/ML is a nightmare for both policymakers and creators while simultaneously offering some of the greatest potential advancements imaginable … and many that yet remain to be imagined. For the last 2 years at the Walt Disney Studios, I’ve been redeveloping a framework of security controls and guidance to protect some of the highest value assets in film and television today. As part of the SHIELD assessment system, this unified framework now provides the means to articulate and drive security improvements across the entire ecosystem of content creation vendors, products, workflows, processes, and supply chains. And there’s a lot more to do.I’m still an engineer at my core, even if I haven’t written a line of code or break-tested a circuit board in years (although, I understand there’s an AI for that now). The processes and mechanisms I learned long ago easily apply to technology challenges today. There is science in art, and engineering in performance. I don’t make art … but I help make it better-And now for the buzzwords I live: product and program management, data analysis, security, governance, compliance, marketing, partner development, leadership, content creator, production, VR/AR, and industry standards / alliances.I help people solve technical and procedural problems without getting in their way. I focus on enabling those who deliver innovation through software and guidance.I\'m at your disposal for all manner of engagements, be they short or long term, consulting or advisory, permanent or temporary. You will find many examples of my work linked below, with more available upon request. Drop me a line!
