ABOUT JOEL MILLS

Director, Music, for British Council, UK\'s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities.I develop, manage, and oversee British Council\'s global music strategy, to ensure a lively and meaningful portfolio of music and arts programmes that create UK and international opportunities. I work with partners across the breadth of music sector from the independent music world spanning electronic, folk and indie, through to classical music and cross-disciplinary organisations. Programmes include Selector Radio, Future Art and Culture in partnership with British Underground and ACE; partnership with PRSF for International Showcase Fund, alongside a variety of collaborative grant opportunities, international delegations to UK festivals and conferences - and professional and talent development opportunities. A significant part of my current role is brokering partnerships to help the UK and international arts and music sector connect and internationalise. I have spent many years exploring, supporting and advocacy for cross-disciplinary work, especially at the intersection of arts, music and technology. It\'s exciting and helps shape the future! I enjoy arts work that elevates place-making, shapes the public realm and participation that ensures a plurality of voices. My background brings 25 years experience of music and arts management spanning across both the commercial and funded sector. I have worked on festivals, commercial shows, events, projects, and sector development. A stint as Director Arts for sub-Saharan Africa for British Council gave me fresh perspectives and involved overseeing the arts programme for the region. As well as managing a South Africa - EU funding project, I worked extensively across multiple art forms, supporting a wide range of projects from architecture, literature to visual arts. Regional programme responsibilities have included working in East Asia, Sub Saharan Africa, South Asia and Americas, so enjoy many connections and working across a brilliant and often dispersed team. I like to grapple with ideas and have been avidly studying philosophy, so read widely about philosophy of art and aesthetics, future tech, AI, and \'The Human Condition\'. I write articles, essays, and reviews on music, art, and culture, and am a committed humanist.
