Served as Managing Director Supply Chain Management Institute (SCMI), from 2011 to 2021. As Managing Director, I recruited and served as chair of our advisory board; organized and delivered two world-class industry conferences annually; collaborated with industry, academia, and students on a variety of projects; and supported faculty in their research. I now focus on teaching graduate courses in supply chain management, as well as developing and delivering industry workshops and seminars, sharing my knowledge as an industry speaker, and securing/overseeing consulting projects to enhance experiential education for students. I also serve as a Board member on the Reshoring Institute focused on bringing manufacturing jobs back to America.

ABOUT JOEL SUTHERLAND

Joel has more than 40 years experience as a supply chain executive, educator, consultant and public speaker. Joel has delivered hundreds of presentations and workshops around the world and is frequently sought out as a subject matter expert by the WSJ, The Economist, USA Today, US News, Fox News, NBC, and other trade publications/journals. Joel earned a BS from the University of Southern California, with a focus in logistics and transportation management, and an MBA from Pepperdine University. As an adjunct professor, taught MBA courses at USC. As Board Chair of the Council of Logistics Management in 2001, Joel was responsible for developing the definition of supply chain management, still used by the Council and professionals around the world. He then led the effort to change the name of the Council to its current name - the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP). Joel was also responsible for the creation of the logistics novel, Precipice, published in 1997, used to teach and motivate future supply chain professionals in an entertaining way.Recognizing Joel’s numerous contributions over his career; CSCMP awarded him with their highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, in 2009 and is in CSCMP\'s Supply Chain Hall of Fame. Joel also received the Professional Achievement Award from Logistics Management magazine, was recognized as one of the Top 20 Logistics Executives by CLO magazine and the Logistics & Supply Chain Forum, and as a Thought Leader by Supply Chain Quarterly and DC Velocity magazines. Prior to joining academia (first Lehigh and now the University of San Diego), Joel held executive level positions at Denso (Toyota\'s largest global supplier), International Paper, ConAgra, Formica, JB Hunt/Transplace, and CSX Rail/Sealand Services - creating and managing a pan-European 3PL.Specialties: Toyota Production System/Lean; Outsourcing; Supply Chain Collaboration; Global Supply Chain Management; Risk Management; Managing Supply Chain Complexity; Talent Management; Supply Chain Sustainability; Leadership/Team Building; Change Management; Strategic Planning; Measuring for Performance Improvement.
