About Joel Tyson

With over four years of work experience in biochemical engineering and inhalation toxicology, I am passionate about bridging methodological gaps in physiologically relevant inhalation toxicology. My mission is to improve the assessment of negative health effects caused by aerosolized particulates in air pollution, and to contribute to the advancement of biomimetic cell culture technology. I am currently a PhD candidate and graduate teaching assistant at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), where I work with a diverse and collaborative team of researchers, faculty, and students. In my current role, I have proposed and am testing biophysical, proteomic, and genetic hypotheses about cellular responses to particulate matter using multiple assays, such as intrinsic and extrinsic fluorometry, mass spectroscopy, DLS and RT-PCR. I have also mentored several undergraduate and master’s students in cellular toxicology and biomaterials projects, and co-authored three publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Bridging methodological gaps in physiologically relevant inhalation toxicology. To improve the assessment of negative health effects caused aerosolized particulates in air prolution, my work aims to develop in vitro procedures to elucidate the role of particulate matter constituents to lung cell oxidative stress using biomimetic cell culture. I have proposed and am testing biophysical, proteomic, and genetic hypotheses about cellular responses to particulate matter using multiple assays including intrinsic and extrinsic fluorometry, mass spectroscopy, DLS and RT-PCR. While doing this work, I have mentored several undergraduate and master’s students in cellular toxicology and biomaterials projects.
