About Joel Toppen
Joel has extensive experience working as a professional consultant for international relief and development agencies, primarily focusing on food security and agricultural development in sub-Saharan Africa. He has conducted field research in Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. Joel’s professional written work has been cited in U.S. Senate testimony and has appeared in the pages of Peace & Change, Christian Scholar’s Review, and the World Food Programme’s NGO Update. Joel is an award-winning educator at Hope College, where he has been teaching global politics since 1997. In that role he has created student internships in South Africa and Tanzania, and led academic terms in Japan, Rwanda, and Washington, DC.
