Named for a colonial route through central Virginia, Three Notch’d Road is the area’s only professional ensemble that performs a full season of early music on period instruments. Our musicianship is founded on a vigorous historical approach, offering little-known music of the baroque as well as incisive performances of well-known favorites. In addition to our subscription series, Three Notch’d Road musicians perform in schools throughout central Virginia.

ABOUT JOEL S. KUMRO
Joel S. Kumro received an undergraduate music degree from Buffalo State University and studied organ privately with Margaret Harper at the Eastman School of Music. He received a Master of Arts in Liturgical Music from Saint John’s University in Collegeville MN, where he studied organ with Kim Kasling, voice with Carolyn Finley, chant with Fr. Anthony Ruff, and conducting with Axel Theimer. Joel is the Choirmaster and Organist at Saint Benedict Catholic Church in Richmond, VA. In addition to planning music for all liturgical celebrations and directing choirs of both adults and children, he also founded and coordinates Saint Benedict Music Series. Performing frequently as an organist, tenor, and harpsichordist, Joel has appeared with organizations including the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM,) the Richmond and Twin Cities Chapters of the American Guild of Organists (AGO,) American Institute of Organbuilders, Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians, RVA Baroque, Three Notch’d Road: The Virginia Baroque Ensemble, Trio Niche, Capitol Opera Richmond, Classical Revolution RVA, Richmond Concert Chorale, Central Virginia Masterworks Chorale, Wren Masters, Forgotten Clefs, Camerata di Sant’ Antonio, and the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus. Among his notable recent appearances include tenor soloist with the historically-informed fortepiano ensemble Trio Niche, an organ and voice recital for the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City, MO, tenor soloist for the newly-composed work “Love” by William Payn with the Central Virginia Masterworks Chorale and Orchestra, “Praetorious for Eastertide” with Three Notch’d Road, and an organ recital on the newly-installed Juget-Sinclair pipe organ (Op. 54) at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond. Joel currently serves as Sub-Dean of the Richmond Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. In addition, he serves on the board of directors of the Richmond-based period instrument ensemble RVA Baroque, as well as the Charlottesville-based ensemble Three Notch’d Road. He continues vocal studies with Dr. Patrick Carlin. Joel has been published twice in the theological journal Obsculta including his article, “Millennials, the Church, and Liturgy.”
