About Joel Hall

Mechanical/Aero-thermal Energy Systems Engineer with a background in turbo-machinery for power generation. Expertise in gas turbine combustion systems, combustion physics and chemistry, plant systems operation, gas turbine conceptual design, and systems for decarbonized power. Skilled in data analysis, coding and tools development, project management, and team leadership. Interests in emerging energy systems and technologies and their economics.I specialize in the application of fundamental physics and engineering principles to novel and emerging technology for electrical power generation and/or carbon dioxide removal. As a systems engineer, I excel in the analysis and understanding of \"systems of systems\" at industrial and utility scale. My focus is on the economic viability as well as the physical possibility of new and emerging technology.

We develop new and innovative systems for reliable, dispatchable decarbonized power generation. These include carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and pre-combustion approaches such as oxy-fuel combustion and steam-methane reforming, among others. The emerging tech team develops models and simulations to assess novel and emerging energy systems for techno-economic value, tech readiness level (TRL) and commercial viability. We engineer advanced technology for low carbon intensity fuels (example hydrogen, ammonia, methanol) to serve as clean energy carriers for utility-scale turbine power generation. The emerging tech team runs externally funded programs, from proposal to execution to completion. I served principal investigator (PI) for a recent ARPA-E project paving the way for the next generation of high-efficiency combustion turbines. I serve as an advocate for new and creative ideas to nurture and bring ideas to commercial readiness. I have 25 filed patents. We apply state-of-the-art software tools and methods to simulate the physical processes at work in high-performance engines. We use artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) methods, coupled with physics-based models, to steer the design of our products for maximum value with emphasis on high efficiency and low emissions.
