ABOUT JOEL BUXTON

Joel Buxton is an award-winning screenwriter and stand-up/sketch comedian whose work spans television, animation, film, and digital storytelling. Known for his sharp comedic voice and grounded emotional tone, Joel has written for acclaimed series including This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Tiny and Tall, Dino Dex, Inspector Gadget, Total Dramarama, Miss Persona (Emmy-nominated), and Cupcake and Dino: General Services (WGC-nominated).In 2025, he received two Writers Guild of Canada Award nominations for Open Season: Call of Nature and won Best Writing in a Short Film for his sci-fi short “Let Me In.” He has also written narrative content for two free-roam VR titles with eOne’s Secret Location Studio and served as lead story editor for the award-winning webseries Princess Sparkly Butt and the Hot Dog Kid.Joel’s short fiction has appeared in Lightspeed Magazine, Polar Borealis, and The No Sleep Podcast, and he was senior editor of the comic series The Future Favors The Bold. As a stand-up comedian, he has performed for over a decade at JFL42, NxNE, and the CBC Music Festival, and produced original shows such as Attaboy: The Stand-Up Show Where Fake Parents Are Proud of You and Someone’s Gotta Go at Toronto’s Comedy Bar. He has also released two sketch albums and assistant directed Second City Toronto’s 79th mainstage revue.Currently, Joel has a contained thriller feature in pre-production with Mind’s Eye Entertainment (with Telefilm support) and a ‘tween animated series in development with Sinking Ship Entertainment. He contributed writing to CBC’s sci-fi podcast Limited Capacity and jokes to the topical comedy show Because News.A faculty member at The Second City Toronto Training Centre and George Brown College, Joel teaches comedy and screenwriting, drawing on his background as a former high school teacher with a Bachelor of Education. His recent recognitions include Top 3 in the NYC Midnight Short Screenplay Competition, Top 6 in the Screencraft Fellowship, and a Nicholl Fellowship semi-finalist, placing in the top 2% of over 6,900 scripts.
