About Joel Brown
As an internationally recognized expert serving with the University of California, San Diego, leader of an internationally awarded non-profit engaging prevention, program evaluation and resilience, I am an innovator in agency development, behavioral research and practice. I am on LinkedIn to grow my professional network and explore new opportunities in non-profit leadership, higher education, and organizational development. To discuss skills and experience, please feel free to connect directly. My skill set as an Evaluation & Assessment specialist has been applied to some of the largest and most comprehensive program and policy studies in the United States. Additionally, I have been called upon to address a number of the country’s leading research institutions, including Columbia University, Stanford, and UC Berkeley. A trusted consultant and thought influencer, my interdisciplinary success has allowed me to break down silos and to help people from disparate professions both collaborate and succeed. Additionally, much of my content effort has been devoted to prevention science and the study and practice of resilience. As one of the first to re-conceptualize resilience as a skill rather than a fixed quality, I helped found the Center for Educational Research and Development (CERD). CERD’s highly effective methods have helped thousands of individuals and organizations, while garnering attention from major media outlets, from the New York Times to NPR. Our efforts have also proven valuable to multiple national and international government entities, as demonstrated by our collaborations with non-profit organizations, public agencies and businesses, ranging from major airlines to schools. I have deep experience in promoting and developing resilience skills across business, health, education, and non-profit sectors. For these efforts, we received prestigious Corporate Vision Magazine’s unsolicited 2019 Private Education and Development Award for “pioneering” work in “resilience skills training and development.\"

Jan 1997 — Present · San Diego, CA, US
The Center for Educational Research + Development (CERD) is a team of highly regarded researchers and practitioners dedicated to building resilience skills in individuals, families, organizations, and communities. For these efforts, we received prestigious Corporate Vision Magazine’s unsolicited 2019 Private Education and Development Award for “pioneering” work in “resilience skills training and development.\" CERD was born of groundbreaking research that revolutionized the way in which resilience is understood. Along with several distinguished colleagues, I founded CERD in order to study and teach resilience as a skill that can be acquired and developed over time. As Executive Director of CERD, I work directly with our clients while maintaining oversight of all center operations, staff management, service offerings, team building, and development. Our teams work with a wide range of populations and clients, from individuals and families to international organizations and governments. We provide the following strengths-based services in regards to resilience development: Non-profit leadership, Organizational and Professional Development Program and Policy Evaluation Needs Assessment and Strategic Planning In particular, our center focuses on the evaluation, research, and practice of resilience in health systems and drug prevention and treatment settings. We empower these organizations to utilize the most cutting-edge research in resilience development to improve their care and outcomes. For a detailed list of accomplishments, please request my CV.
