Deliver MICE (mental health in childhood epilepsy) therapy to children and their parents/caregivers - weekly 1-to-1 sessions, covering various anxiety and conduct related issues from sleep, appearance, fitting in, aggression, themes of identity etc. Children often have severe mental health issues. Age ranges of 9 to 14 so far. Includes completing triage calls with caregivers initially.Visit children with epilepsy and intellectual disability in schools/at home and conduct psychometric tests on them (WISC/Bayley) as part of a long term study. Children aged 8 to 10. Supplemented by data collection on sleep, all analysed in SPSS.Lead author of published paper in the journal Seizure, titled \"Transition from paediatric healthcare to adult healthcare for young people with epilepsy in the UK: A scoping review\". Included scoping review of all published UK research on transition, and analysis of NHS and charity resources out there regarding transition. Had a poster presentation at the International League Against Epilepsy\'s Annual Congress in September 2025. Due to present at BPNA\'s annual conference in Jan 2025.Conducted focus groups with children with epilepsy ranging from age 13 to 25 regarding the transition process in the NHS and subsequent thematic analysis.Work regularly with NHS stakeholders, including clinicians, boards, administrative staff etc. Project lead on a service evaluation project.Regular engagement with children from ages around 6 to 25 as part of being at the charity.

ABOUT JOE PATERNOSTER
Hi, I’m Joe, currently an assistant research psychologist at a charity close to my heart, Young Epilepsy. I am a conscientious, creative and ambitious individual, with a wide range of career experiences from arts and sciences roles, to the charity sector and corporate world.I was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 12 and it has shaped who I am today. I ran the London Marathon for Young Epilepsy when I was 18 to raise money for the cause, and after volunteering with them for 5 years and serving on the trustee board for 2, I was delighted to join them as an employee in January 2025. My role has seen me publish a research paper in the journal Seizure, carry out MICE therapy, run focus groups with children and young people with epilepsy and their parents, present at international conferences and so much more.I studied at the Uni of Nottingham, attaining a first in my English undergraduate degree and a distinction in my Psychology Master’s. I loved university, becoming the President of the English Society and writing, directing and editing my own TV show Little Notts. This led me to run for election as the Activities Officer at the Students’ Union, which was simply the most fun job in the world! I worked there for a year as one of the leaders at this student multi-million pound organisation, chairing committees, organising countless events, writing papers, dealing with welfare incidents amongst so many other things, in an unprecedently challenging year for the organisation.Following this, I joined the company MHR on their graduate scheme. I rotated around several departments, including Sales, Marketing, Product Design and Cyber Security. The experience was invaluable – I produced videos, took part in AGILE working, ran cyber security campaigns, provided support on a US-based marketing campaign and so much more. Us grads were responsible for sustainability initiatives at the company, giving me opportunities to present to the company’s board, volunteer, direct strategy and create promotional content. In my spare time, I love writing. I dream of one day being a film/TV director/showrunner, and have had several experiences in TV, including volunteering on set for Hollyoaks and the BBC. I submit scripts regularly to annual competitions – hopefully I’ll be successful some day!Always happy for people to reach out – I’m interested in disability/accessibility in the UK (particularly in epilepsy), student related issues, the creative industries and psychological research. Oh, and the perils of being a West Ham United fan, of course.
