About Joe Chang

Dr. Chang is a thoracic radiation oncologist with over 35 years of clinical and research experience. He holds an endowed Texas Distinguished Professorship and serves as the Director of the Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Additionally, he is honored as a Fellow of the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and the American College of Radiology (ACR). He has also been recognized with the \"Best Doctors of America\" award and has been listed as one of the top (best) three thoracic radiation oncologists in the world by Google AI overview.Dr. Chang is a voting committee member of the NCCN thoracic guidelines, a Board Director of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), and the Clinical Scientific Program Chair for the Particle Therapy Cooperative Group (PTCOG). He served as chair of both the international Proton Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG) Thoracic Committee and the American Radium Society Thoracic Appropriateness Use Criteria (AUC) committees. As one of the pioneers in the fields of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR), proton therapy, and immunotherapy for lung cancer, he has authored over 400 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals, including The Lancet, Nature, JAMA, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, and International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics (the Red Journal), among others. His prospective studies—including randomized trials comparing surgery versus SABR for operable stage I lung cancer, stereotactic proton versus photon radiotherapy in challenging early-stage lung cancer, concurrent proton therapy and chemotherapy in stage lung cancer, implementation of intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) in lung cancer, and randomized comparisons of SABR alone versus SABR combined with immunotherapy (I-SABR)—were among the first reported clinical studies globally to explore these innovative treatment approaches. His research has been instrumental in establishing the roles of SABR, proton therapy, and combined immunotherapy with SABR (I-SABR) in the management of early-stage lung cancer. Moreover, on behalf of national and international societies, he has led several key consensus statements that have significantly impacted the radiation oncology community. These include guidelines on SABR, proton therapy, IMPT, and approaches to managing NSCLC, small cell lung cancer, oligometastasis, and re-irradiation of thoracic malignancies.
