ABOUT JOCHEN BARD

Division Director Energy Process Technology The activities of the division link the areas of energy conversion processes and control engineering using sophisticated methods of control and system technology. The application fields covered are wind energy technology, marine energy technology, energy storage systems technology, power to gas and bioenergy systems. The work covers fundamental theoretical studies, mathematical modeling and simulation, experimental verification and practical trials in the laboratory and in the field, realization of functional prototypes, and integration into turbines and full scale demonstration systems. The division covers application oriented R&D in: Control Engineering - Control engineering solutions in renewable energies and conversion technologies - Modeling and control design for mechatronic systems - Control methods for wind turbines, wave and tidal energy technologies to reduce the extreme loads / fatigue loads - Control method for inverter based renewable feeder (wind farms, etc.) to increase network stability Energy Storage Systems - Real-time simulation systems for the grid integration of renewable feeder - Lead-acid and Li-ion batteries modelling, simulation and real time applications (emulators)- Energy storage concepts in the kW to the MW range (i.e. compressed air, offshore pumpstorage) Bioenergsystems - Power to Gas e.g. methanation of hydrogen using biogas as the CO2 source - integration of bioenergy plants into energy supply structures - system technology for biogas plants and biogas upgrading offsetting supply-demand fluctuations in future energy supply structures - Optimization of the interaction between bioenergy systems and other renewable energy forms
