ABOUT JOASIA JACOBS
As a Sociology and Comparative Women’s Studies double major on the Pre-Law track with a concentration in women’s health and a minor in Spanish, I approach the legal field through an intersectional lens that centers race, gender, health, and systemic inequality. My academic journey is rooted in a commitment to community engagement, prison reform, and justice for historically marginalized populations. I aspire to become a criminal defense attorney who not only defends but also disrupts—challenging a system that too often punishes poverty, criminalizes mental illness, and dehumanizes Black and Brown communities. I am dedicated to prison reform and advocating for the rights and dignity of incarcerated individuals. Through my work with organizations like Unlocked Minds and Spelman’s Petals of Promise, alongside research focused on mental health in Abaco, Bahamas with the University of Miami’s Global Institute, I strive to challenge the criminalization of marginalized communities and promote fairness and equity. Motivated by both lived experience and scholarship, I believe true justice is rooted in advocacy, restorative practices, and community empowerment. I am committed to using my education and voice to advance these values and drive meaningful social change.
