I’ve been working at AWS Billing. AWS needs to maintain product and pricing information for the hundreds of millions of product variations we sell or sold.I work autonomously with my team maintaining some of these services and working everyday to allow AWS service teams to author, store and deliver accurate product information. Our services are upstream of every point of interaction the customer has with their AWS bills, from price lists, to the marketing pages, their invoices and Insights.Our services process over 90 million requests per day across 6 regions in the US, UK and China, with an availability of over 99.95%. We operate these services ourselves, so I periodically perform operational incident response duties and am on-call for one week, 24/7.My biggest win was replacing a sizable dataset which was loaded to memory, as a lookup table, in a core bill computation job, with a rule-based decision support system, which reduced this job\'s runtime by 40%, memory by 26%, and accidentally lost revenue by over 1 million US dollars per month.
