ABOUT JOAO LOUSADA

With a background in Aerospace Engineering, I worked initially as an Assembly Integration and Testing engineer, at OHB System, on ESA’s MTG project (Meteosat Third Generation), before starting at the Columbus Control Centre (COL-CC) in 2016, as systems operations engineer (STRATOS), responsible for the different subsystem of the Columbus module, on the ISS. I was selected as Columbus Flight Director, in 2019. In that role, I was responsible for leading the European flight control team and coordinating the operations of the European module, assuring crew safety and mission success. I was the Lead Flight Director during Increments 65 and 67, which included the successful missions “Alpha” and “Minerva” of Thomas Pesquet and Samantha Cristoforetti, respectively. In 2022, I joined the ESA ISS and Gateway Operations team, on the operations management, preparation and integration. Currently, I am the ISS Operations Lead for ESA.Furthermore, I’ve always been passionate about sharing my knowledge and my experiences not only with colleagues, but also with the general public, and young students. I often give public lectures, webinars, presentations and tours of the Columbus Control Centre, aimed at the general public and students. I’ve been particularly active within the Austrian Space Forum (OeWF), which I joined in 2015, as crew member for Mars analog expeditions.
