ABOUT JOÃO DA MATA

I’m an External PhD Candidate at Technische Universität Berlin and Guest Researcher at DFKI, working with the XplaiNLP group on Intelligent Decision Support Systems (IDSS) for fact-checking.My research bridges Explainable AI (XAI), Human-Computer Interaction, and multi-modal AI to design transparent, legally compliant verification tools that strengthen media integrity and trust. Before academia, I built large-scale web apps in industry (front-end, back-end, data), which now informs my research with a strong product and UX mindset. I hold an M.A. in Media Science (HU Berlin) and a B.A. in Journalism (UFMG), with early experience in radio, press at the German Parliament, and newspaper reporting.Interests: XAI • IDSS for fact-checking • Human-AI interaction & trust • Multi-modal AI • Regulatory & ethical compliance in AICurrent focus: Designing explainable, user-centric verification workflows for newsrooms and fact-checkers—integrating LLMs, visual evidence analysis, and auditability.
