ABOUT JOANNE ROBBINS

Joanne manages the Weather Impacts Team and has 18 years’ experience working on risk and impact modelling for improved forecasting and warning of hydro-meteorological hazards. Her research focuses on developing forecast applications that support decision-making for high-impact weather events. This involves integrating hazard forecasts with vulnerability and exposure datasets and identifying novel ways to produce and evaluate hazard impact models. Her current research activities focus on 3 key themes: developing impact models for hydrometeorological hazards; impact-based evaluation using novel, non-standard observations (e.g. using citizen science and social sensing methods); landslide forecasting and warning. Her work is naturally interdisciplinary and interfaces closely with physical, social and data science disciplines. Joanne is an active member of international working groups supporting World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) multi-year research programmes, including the Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction Project, where she led the S2S Real Time Pilot Initiative, and the HiWeather Project where she co-chairs the Impacts, Vulnerability and Risk Task Team. She currently sits on the steering group of the WMO WWRP Progressing EW4All Oriented to Partnerships and Local Engagement (PEOPLE) project.
