Over the last decade, my passion for Dry Eye Management has led me to tirelessly investigate how my patients\' lifestyle choices may interfere with their treatment success & overall well-being.Just as a diabetes educator must teach diabetic patients about their nutrition & lifestyle habits - I educate my Ocular Surface Disease patients about the importance of choosing safer products, techniques for application & comfort with cosmetics, and usage/removal habits. I ask them to bring photos of their regular skincare/cosmetics products to their OSD follow-up visits to help me ID the “bad guys” in their daily routines. I\'ve uncovered massive exposure to OSD-exacerbating chemicals in some patients’ skin care products. Just because they\'re the most expensive beauty line at a department store, doesn\'t mean that they\'re safe. I\'ve even seen so-called \"eye creams\" that were loaded with 9-13 OSD-exacerbating ingredients & labeled “Not for use around the eye”!We are all consumers. Many of us use eye cosmetics on a daily basis, but even men & women who don\'t use eye makeup may be inadvertently increasing their risk for ocular irritation through their facial cleansing habits.As an Optometrist, I am the guardian of my patients\' ocular surface health. It\'s my duty & obligation to proactively address eye safety & ID what is safe to use around the eyes. I advocate label reading & choosing products with fewer unpronounceable ingredients. Don\'t trust the claims. Just because a package says “natural,” “vegan,” “not tested on animals,” or even “ophthalmologist tested,” does NOT guarantee that it\'s ocular surface–friendly. ABOUT JOANNA SLUSKY
Dr. Joanna Slusky is an Entrepreneur and an Integrative Medical Optometrist with nearly twenty years of experience. She immigrated from Poland with her Mother at age twelve with two suitcases, five-hundred dollars, and without the ability to speak English. A quick study, she achieved a 4.0 GPA, attended Northwestern University, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Illinois College of Optometry. In 2007, during freshman year of Optometry school, she began caring for Chicagoland\'s eyes with the opening of Halsted Eye Boutique; expanding in 2021 with the acquisition of Eye See Ravenswood. Her passion for eyes began over twenty years ago when her grandfather, a primary care Doctor, was diagnosed with an eye tumor during an eye exam. Further diagnostic testing revealed an advanced case of prostate cancer. He passed away six months later, leaving a lasting impression on her; the eyes are the barometer of overall systemic health. In addition to providing comprehensive eye exams, Dr. Slusky is a dry eye expert, contact lens and myopia control specialist who prefers a holistic approach to eyecare. She incorporates newest technology, luxury eyewear, diet, lifestyle, nutraceuticals, as well as safe skincare and makeup recommendations to support patients’ eyecare needs. Dr. Slusky’s patients rave about her personalized approach, thoroughness, patience, and ability to optimize ocular health by focusing on the root cause rather than just symptoms, in order to improve vision clarity and comfort beyond expectations. In her free time, her passions include photography, art, music, dance, theater, fine dining, fitness, travel, and philanthropy.
