About Joanie Sompayrac

I like to think I exemply what it means to be a native Chattanoogan. I have earned both undergraduate and masters degrees in Accounting at The University of Tennessee - Chattanooga, as well as a law degree at the University of Cincinnati. After practicing as a tax attorney for several years in Cincinnati, Ohio, I to Chattanooga, where I am in my entering my 29th year at the University. Currently I am both the Judith Finley Stone Alliance Professor of Accounting in the Rollins College of Business as well as the Faculty Ombudsperson. I am a licensed CPA in Tennessee and an attorney in Ohio. I have years of experience in estate planning, and I have taught courses in law, estate and gift taxation and accounting for 27 years at UTC.Because of my interests in various properties in and around Chattanooga, changing implications of the tax law and my love of working with people, I decided several years ago that real estate would be an excellent way to combine these interests. I am a licensed Realtor in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. During my first year in real estate, Keller Williams awarded me the \"Rising Star\" Award for being the new agent who sold the most volume. More importantly, I have been able to use what I have learned in real estate in the classroom as well as in my research.I am recent past President of the Chattanooga Chapter of the Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance, current Treasurer of Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Chair of the Finance Council at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Member of the Hamilton County Industrial Development Board, and Coordinator of the Ladies of Black Creek Book Club. When I am not working, I love cooking, travelling, reading (at least 60 books per year), following Alabama football, spoiling my rescue pups Ella & Red and spending time with my marathon-running husband, Tony Grossi.
