Water Quality Laboratory Specialist, Shellfish Growing Area Program, Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture, Dept. of Marine Resources.Ensuring water quality and biotoxin standards are met in water bodies where shellfish are harvested for consumption- Collect and process water and shellfish samples in accordance with National Shellfish Sanitation Program growing area management standards- Employ mTEC membrane filtration methods to identify E. coli concentrations in water samples collected across the western Maine coastline- Prepare media, including mTEC, m-Endo, lauryl tryptose broth, tryptic soy broth, plate count agar, and more, for testing various types of samples for different pathogens- Maintain vigorous QA/QC logs required by the FDA, including autoclave sterilization, media preparation, balance calibration, pipette sterilization, UV sterilization, and more, on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis- Research, plan, and implement q- and digital PCR testing for for Vibrio sp. identification in water and shellfish samples, ultimately for the purpose of shellfish growing area reopening- Order laboratory supplies from vendors including FisherScientific, VWR, Thomas Scientific, and MilliPore Sigma, and properly track and complete purchase order records- Write annual, triennial, and 12-year sanitary survey reports on the water quality status of Western Maine growing areas- Assist with Biotoxin program concerned with PSP/ASP shellfish testing and phytoplankton sample collection and identification.
