About Jessica Lesperance

I design how people and models communicate. At Google DeepMind, I shape voice, behavior, and safety within Gemini’s health and wellness vertical. I focus on how language is structured, how it sounds, and how it is interpreted in people’s lives as they care for themselves and their families. My path here was sideways: I trained as an information scientist (MS, Michigan), which turns out to be unusually good preparation for writing for models. Before DeepMind I led content design at Facebook, where I built the team responsible for the product\'s voice and personality — writing systems that governed copy decisions across a 3-billion-user product. Before that, UX leadership at Huge for Twitter, Salesforce, Four Seasons, and American Express.The through-line: I craft the guidance and language that defines how products behave. At Facebook, content guidelines shaped thousands of daily product decisions. At DeepMind, principles and system instructions guide millions of model responses. The problem gets bigger, messier, and decidedly more interesting every year.I\'m drawn to the parts of model design and UX that are fundamentally about care — how a model responds when it really matters, what it refuses and what it offers when someone\'s struggling, and when it can make us smile. Especially in the health and mental wellbeing space.

   Currently defining how Gemini communicates with people within health and wellness space. I author system instructions, define eval criteria and rubrics, determine quality bar, and shape response quality in a domain where factuality and care matter a lot. More coming soon.Shipped:Health & Wellness Disclaimers. Led work to update disclaimers, including shipping language to ensure users understand Gemini’s responses included information only. Worked in close partnership with legal and policy.Toolkit: evals, system instructions, rubric design, response architecture, and flows. I am most at home in 0-1 spaces tackling problems that are both holistic and messy.
