About Juan Cahue
I bring awareness to the educational inequity that exists in the way that multilingual learners experience school in the United States. I aim to eliminate the negative stigma that surrounds being multilingual in a monolingual society. By serving as the Multilingual Learners Coordinator for grades 7-12 at Victory College Prep, I have the opportunity to combat this in Indianapolis, Indiana. My approach is data-driven, focusing on metrics such as English proficiency, grade point average, attendance, and behavior and by providing effective resources such as instructional practices, lesson plans, and development for over 40 teachers and staff who work directly with these students.I embody the term “first-generation”, being Chicano, as well as the first in my family to attend school in the U.S, graduating from recognized elementary, high school, undergraduate and graduate institutions. My personal journey as a multilingual learner has directly defined the way I advocate for my students because my experience resembles theirs. My ability to promote and encourage multilingualism, elevate my relationships, and provide clear and aligned communication with my colleagues allows me to establish a presence of comfort and trust with the staff in the spaces I work. Being able to proudly share that over 50 percent of the 57 students that I support have shown proficiency growth in the last three years, and over 70 percent of them currently maintain a GPA above a 3.0, is all of the validation I need to continue fighting for them through my work.
