About Ji Son

Ji Son is a Professor of Psychology at California State University, Los Angeles. She is a co-author (along with Jim Stigler) of the interactive textbook Introduction to \"Statistics & Data Science: A Modeling Approach,\" used by thousands of introductory statistics students (available at CourseKata.org). She holds a PhD in Cognitive Science and Psychology from the Indiana University, Bloomington. She is interested in how basic cognitive and perceptual processes foster rich and transferable learning. Her work examines methods of applying these psychological insights at scale to issues like mathematics remediation and student success. She is the director of the Learning Lab at Cal State LA. Many of the studies in the Learning Lab examine the role of perception in how students and young children learn abstract ideas, such as math and science. The central idea behind Ji’s work is that learning changes the way we see the world.
