ABOUT JISHNU AK
I am a doctoral researcher at WMG, University of Warwick, specialising in the mathematical modelling and simulation of dynamic systems, with a particular focus on Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). My expertise includes electrical, electrochemical, thermal, and degradation modelling of LIBs. Specifically, I enhance these models using scientific machine learning (SciML) approaches. By integrating learning techniques into traditional physics-based battery models, I aim to bridge the gap between causation-driven frameworks and data-driven insights, effectively capturing missing physics through data correlations. My most notable contribution is the development of a novel SciML framework for battery degradation modelling. In this work, we start with a physics-based degradation model that includes multiple degradation mechanisms. We then identify which mechanisms are poorly modelled and replace them with ML models while retaining others. The data-driven model learns optimal constitutive relations directly from ageing data. We demonstrated this approach for both calendar and cyclic ageing modelling, achieving, on average, a reduction of 50% in RMSE for ageing indicators such as capacity.Alongside my PhD, I have worked as a research assistant on projects with the Faraday Institution and Eatron Technologies, where my responsibilities included the development and parameterisation of battery performance and degradation models, as well as conducting cell cycling experiments.
