ABOUT JIM UNDERWOOD

Jim Underwood is an accomplished fire service professional with over 30 years of experience in leadership, operations, and training. Currently serving as an Assistant Fire Chief with the Long Beach Fire Department, he has demonstrated expertise in managing complex emergency incidents, multi-agency collaborations, and specialized programs.Jim\'s extensive leadership roles include serving as the Incident Management Team Manager, COVID-19 Incident Commander, and Fire Boat Program Manager. He has been the Director of Department Training, overseeing the development and implementation of critical training programs and leading initiatives such as the US & R Program, HAZMAT Program, and the ISO Update Project. As a member of a Type 1 Incident Management Team, he has been actively involved in major deployments, including Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Gustav, Hurricane Ike, and the Montecito Mudslides.With a proven track record in curriculum development, Jim is the creator and lead instructor for the US & R Task Force Leader Cadre Curriculum and Technical Search Specialist Cadre Curriculum. A California State Certified Instructor, he has also contributed as a Swiftwater Rescue and Rescue Systems instructor. His operational qualifications include serving as a Type 3 Operations Section Chief, Type 1 Division Supervisor, and Strike Team Leader for over 10 years.Jim’s experience spans field operations, labor relations, and regional training coordination. As a Marine Corps veteran of Operation Desert Storm, he brings discipline and mission-focused leadership to every role.
