Develops, implements, and maintains programs for the prevention of accidental losses and for compliance with appropriate State and federal regulatory requirements. An incumbent in this class inspects work areas and associated equipment, including the performance of surprise inspections, the latter when jointly determined necessary or desirable by incumbent and Risk Manager. The incumbent performs a critical review of written materials, including departmental safety programs and objectives, rules and regulations, educational materials, records of employee training, and previous reports of injuries to employees and citizens to identify and assess actual or potential safety problems. Additional duties include the preparation of reports, assisting departments in report preparation, providing advice and assistance regarding the practices and procedures of regulatory agencies, and coordinating and monitoring the return to work of employees following a work-related illness or injury. Tasks are performed under the general supervision of the Risk Manager.Illustrative Examples of WorkConducts on-site Work Inspections in various departments throughout the City of Alexandria to identify violations or deficiencies and recommend corrective action;Develops training material including brochures, papers, articles to educate City Departments on current safety and health issues;Confers with departmental workplace safety specialist regarding specific safety training, return to work of employees after work-related illness/injury and other federal/state regulatory issues;Prepares analytical and statistical reports of City and departmental losses and trends;Performs as Safety and Occupational Health consultant for all departmental safety committees;
