Jim Determan, FAIA is a Principal in the Baltimore office of Craig Gaulden Davis Inc. For 35 years Jim has specialized in the design of K12 and higher education facilities with emphasis on the design of spaces that enhance learning. He is an active member of the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education and the Learning Space Collaboratory. He has a 25 year relationship at Morgan State University, where he has taught graduate design studio, mentored thesis candidates, juried dozens of projects and led funded research. He is a passionate advocate for school design and has provided testimony at school boards, Baltimore City Council, Maryland General Assembly and the United States House of Representatives.Jim has a Master of Architecture degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is past President of AIA Baltimore and former Regional Director on the National Board of the American Institute of Architects, where he guided the creation of knowledge tools for architects. Jim had great impact on the education of thousands of architects as the Chair of the AIA National Convention in Washington DC. He was elected to the AIA College of Fellows in 2012. Jim currently leads a research team who completed a 2015 published study proving the contribution of the physical space design to enhanced learning outcomes for ethnically diverse undergraduate students in active learning classrooms. The research team, joined by The Salk Institute and Terrapin Bright Green recently completed a study titled The Impact of Biophilic Learning Spaces on Student Success, which was published by the AIA in 2019. Findings show biophilic design significantly contributes to reduced student stress and enhanced learning outcomes for middle school students at a Baltimore City charter school.
