ABOUT JHUMA SEN

I am an Advocate practicing at the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. My areas of expertise and interest include anti-discrimination law, criminal justice, public interest law, constitutional and administrative law, and family law with a keen focus on gender justice. I have represented survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, trafficking, and sexual harassment before various courts including district courts in West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court, and the Supreme Court, and have also appeared on behalf of disability rights groups, workers\' unions, farmers groups, tribal rights associations in a range of matters. I have an undergraduate law degree (BBA.LL.B) from Symbiosis Law School Pune and a postgraduate degree in law (LL.M) from the University of California at Berkeley where I read as an American Association of University Women’s International Fellow. I have held several prestigious fellowships and have received honours as recognition of my work in my chosen field. I was an Asia 21 Next Generation Fellow (formerly Asia 21 Young Leaders Initiative) in 2017 under the aegis of the Asia Society. In 2019, I received the Future of Change India Research Fellowship at the University of New South Wales (2019). In 2019, I was also offered the prestigious Eleanor Roosevelt Fellowship in the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School. Currently, I am a Global Fellow at the Centre for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies, Brown University, USA. Along with my law practice, I teach, research, and write on gender justice, human rights, constitutional law, and criminal law, with a keen focus on the intersections of gender and courts. I am currently, an Adjunct Faculty at the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata. I have advised governmental and non-governmental organizations on making justice accessible to marginalized communities. I have also advised international women’s rights federations on gender justice, especially tackling issues of gender-based violence through law, gender justice for athletes, etc. Recently, I was part of the Social Justice Sub-Committee formed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court, which prepared a Handbook on Combating Gender Stereotypes for the judiciary. I am a Convenor of the Indian Feminist Judgments Project, a project that situates writing alternative judgments to judgments that could have been written better or written differently by using a feminist lens. My opinion pieces have been published by the Indian Express, Economic Times, Wire, Mint, Caravan, and Outlook among others.
