About J. Henning Buchholz
I am a strategic initiatives, transformation, and M&A leader who supports global organizations in unlocking value through strategic transactions and enterprise change. As a Principal in Deloitte’s M&A practice and co-leader of the US Divestitures & Separations group, I advise global life sciences, technology, and other organizations on reshaping portfolios, driving growth, and unlocking operational value through complex transactions and enterprise transformations. With over 15 years of experience, I have guided companies ranging from $50 million innovators to $60 billion multinationals through divestitures, integrations, and large-scale transformation programs encompassing strategy, operations, and cross-functional as well as functional domains. My work focuses on enabling organizations to achieve measurable impact from M&A—capturing value from deal strategy and diligence through Day 1 readiness, separation execution, and post-close value realization and optimization. My approach is grounded in the belief that successful M&A is not solely about transactions, but about building stronger, more focused, and future-ready businesses.Having worked in both management consulting and investment banking across the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, I bring global perspectives and a unique combination of strategic vision and operational depth. I am particularly passionate about turning complexity into clarity, assisting executives in structuring decisions and mobilizing organizations around bold change. In addition to client work, I have published extensively on divestitures and transformation, and have taught graduate-level courses on internationalization and market strategy. I hold an MSc in Economic Policy and Anthropology from the University of Oxford, as well as a BA in International Business from Meiji University in Tokyo and the University of Bremen in Germany. Fluent in German and Japanese and a student of other languages, I have lived and worked in more than 30 countries. Outside of my professional pursuits, I am an avid photographer and digital innovator, having sold over images globally and founded ventures that merge creativity and productivity.I am open to conversations with organizations navigating growth, transformation, or portfolio optimization, and is passionate about shaping approaches that turn complexity into clarity—and change into value.
