Teaching Imagining Fugitivity and Futurity in Film and Video:This seminar is designed to facilitate a creative and rigorous conversation around Blackness and the audiovisual, particularly in experimental film/animation, documentary/non-fiction, and video art. Particular attention will be paid to work that is oriented around imagined futurity, resourceful fugitivity, and what is potentially reparative in the everyday. How can filmic media avoid the spectacularization of Black suffering? What does it mean to contend with trauma without reinscribing it into the visual medium? How do we open up pathways to radical methodologies? How can we elevate an ethic of care in Black cultural production? Imagining Fugitivity and Futurity in Film/Video is a space to think with and through contemporary film/video and scholarship that opens up new possibilities to think and create-Taught History of Documentary:This course traces the history of the development of documentary/non-fiction film and video from both traditionally canonized and marginal perspectives during the time period 19••••17. Taught as a broad survey, this course is meant to examine hallmarks of documentary/non-fiction film history as well as consider said history as a historical record in dire need of correction and expansion. Through screenings, assigned readings, lectures, class discussions and assignments, this course will explore some historical and contemporary issues of film theory and practice as they apply to the evolution of documentary/non-fiction film forms. Beyond history and theory, we will consider together the following: ethics, the politics of ethnography, the power of witnessing, the malleability of truth, the construction of the historical record, and visual activism.

ABOUT JHEANELLE BROWN
Jheanelle Brown is a film curator/programmer and educator based in Los Angeles whose curatorial practice creates frameworks to explore the boundlessness of Black life in experimental and non-fiction film and video. She is interested in the space between fugitivity and futurity and elevating an ethic of care. Jheanelle is a board member and an associate programmer for Los Angeles Filmforum and recently served as guest co-curator, with Darol Olu Kae, for Black Radical Imagination. Jheanelle was co-curator, with Sarah Loyer, of Time Is Running Out of Time: Experimental Film and Video from the L.A. Rebellion and Today on view at Art + Practice. She is currently Special Faculty at California Institute of the Arts and Distinguished Visiting Artist at Otis College of Art and Design. She received her master\'s degree from USC\'s Cinema & Media Studies program and her bachelor\'s degree from Georgetown University\'s School of Foreign Service.
