Education advocate, policy nerd, and unapologetic champion for student success. Honored to lead some of the most ambitious higher education transformation in California history including strengthening the transfer pathway for hundreds of thousands of community college students, dismantling harmful assessment and placement practices, creating a $2 billion student-centered funding formula, and simplifying student aid. Former head of a large urban school district, where I oversaw a half a billion dollar annual budget, dramatically raised high school graduation rates, improved college-readiness, narrowed opportunity gaps, and launched an equity index to identify and address the academic and social emotional needs of students. Recipient of the 2023 National Transfer Champion Catalyst Award from the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students, 2022 Distinguished Alumni for the California Community College system. 2020 Racial Equity Visionary Award from the Center for Urban Education, 2018 recipient of the Woman of the Year Award from the Kings (NBA), and 2016 recipient of the Cindy Marano Leadership Award from the Women’s Foundation of California. Governor Gavin Newsom’s appointee on the AB 928 Intersegmental Transfer Committee. Married to Arsenio Mataka, Senior Advisor for Climate and Health Equity at the Biden Administration with two crazy, amazing kids.
