ABOUT JESSICA ROBERTS
I am a Geographer and Environmental Social Scientist specialising in natural and cultural heritage conservation, with a focus on enhancing the resilience, sustainability, and equity of heritage sites and the communities that depend on them. My work integrates risk management, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and climate change adaptation (CCA) to safeguard heritage while strengthening community preparedness and awareness.I develop and apply participatory research, monitoring, evaluation, and assessment methods, working directly with local and indigenous communities. This includes both programmatic evaluations and desk-based assessments, with a focus on value, impact, integrity, risk, and consent. My approach ensures interventions are co-designed, locally relevant, inclusive, and actionable.Alongside academic research, I produce practical outputs, including participatory toolkits, guidance frameworks, and workshops. I have provided consultancy for organisations including IUCN/UNESCO, ITAD, NESTA, DFID, and SEI-York, supporting evidence-based decision-making, impact evaluation, and strategy development across sustainability, heritage, conservation, and resilience programs.My work focuses on three complementary areas:• Integrating Indigenous knowledge into heritage and risk management frameworks to ensure equitable, sustainable, and effective interventions.• Developing participatory and interdisciplinary approaches, including M&E, to enhance the long-term impact, effectiveness, and equity of heritage, DRR, and CCA initiatives.• Investigating the role of heritage conservation in both addressing environmental and disaster risks and in strengthening community preparedness, resilience, and awareness.I combine interdisciplinary methods, applied expertise, and direct community engagement to deliver outcomes that matter — from high-quality research to practical tools and strategic advice.
