About Jesse Hilenski
Historically, CoStar Group has specialized in gathering enormous amounts of information on the US commercial real estate industry and selling this information via various software products to other enterprises like brokerages, developers and banks. Recently, it has expanded its operations into gathering information for free, online marketplaces for commercial (LoopNet), multi-family (Apartments.com) and single-family residential (Homes.com) availabilities that connect consumers directly to the real estate they need via the web. CoStar has been unquestionably successful in its expansion into consumer marketplaces, as both LoopNet and Apartments.com are easily the most trafficked websites in their respective niches.Like hundreds of other employees in Washington DC, Atlanta, San Diego and London, I began my CoStar career in the company\'s research division. Having no prior knowledge or experience in the economics of commercial real estate, I quickly became familiarized with the intricacies of this business by speaking directly with hundreds of brokers, owners and developers about their listings, properties and upcoming projects. Within 9 months, I was selected from a pool of 14 applicants for 1 of 2 positions on a new team focused on researching the US apartment market. 6 months after that, I was chosen to manage that team. In the Summer of 2015, after over 4 years in CoStar\'s research department and 3 years in management, I was recruited to join the department for which I had fostered a genuine passion and curiosity during my time in research.As Product Manger for Research Software, I gather requirements and design new technology for CoStar\'s Research division. As a former member of that division, I have unique insights into the types of technology they need, and am challenged each day to work with them on fueling CoStar\'s growth from $200 million in revenue when I joined the company to its $2.7 billion in revenue in 2024.
