Jerome Carlos Frierson, Esq. is the inaugural Vice President of Legal Services at BronxWorks, where he oversees the organization’s entire legal services portfolio, serves as primary lawyer responsible for the agency’s external legal affairs and spearheads the development of its new Tenant Defense Program. This program is a cornerstone of New York City’s Universal Access to Counsel initiative, which guarantees free legal representation for tenants facing eviction in housing court. Jerome leads a dynamic legal department of professionals, including supervising attorneys, staff attorneys, paralegals, administrative staff, and practitioners specializing in housing, immigration, domestic violence, and crime victim assistance. His department is dedicated to providing holistic and comprehensive legal services to vulnerable Bronx residents.With more than a decade of professional experience, Jerome is a litigator committed to client-centered, trauma-informed advocacy and access to justice. At BronxWorks, he is building a program that not only provides legal representation but also integrates housing advocacy with public benefits, immigration assistance, and social services to support clients holistically.CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:Before joining BronxWorks, Jerome served as the Inaugural Director of the Right to Counsel at The Bronx Defenders, where his leadership resulted in a 95% success rate in avoiding or delaying evictions. His strategic management secured a $2.5 million contract renewal in 2023, reflecting his ability to deliver results and attract significant funding.Previously, Jerome held the role of Deputy Director and Supervising Attorney at Legal Services NYC, where he supervised teams that prevented forcible evictions, advocated for tenants in gentrifying neighborhoods, and won vital legal protections for families facing housing instability.EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP:Jerome earned his J.D. from Tulane University Law School, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Southern Journal of Policy and Justice, and his B.A. in Political Science and African & Afro-American Studies from Brandeis University.
