WORK HISTORY
Diversity and Civic Leadership Coordinator @City of Portland
I am in my 7th year of managing the Diversity and Civic Leadership Programs for the City of Portland through the office of Neighborhood Involvement. Those 7 years have allowed me to hone my fields of program management, funding, accounting organizing and training created to encourage both People of color and immigrants and refugee populations to engage civic-ally with the City of Portland through capacity building grants to said communities so they can train their leaders in culturally specific grassroots organizing and Civics training. One one level it tends to feel like we are paying historically under served and under-represented communities to address our faults in being equitable and deliver equitable service. My background before I came to the City was 15 years in Community organizing for low income workers rights and Environmental Justice communities as the Director and head organizer of the Environmental Justice Action Group. This is where I learned it is imperative that the people most directly affected by the decisions made by Government MUST have a meaningful, not token seat at the table. It was through this work that the North Portland community defeated the expansion of the I-5 freeway through their community and eventually the Mega Columbia River Crossing bridge project that was a giant waste of federal money. My organizing and training work is also in the areas of Native American issues and Human trafficking as I am a survivor of HT.
