In my role I am responsible for driving exploratory R&D projects to expand Terumo BCT’s biotechnology portfolio. Utilizing a patient-centered design approach to develop new treatments and medical devices and from back-of-the-napkin sketches through full feasibility stages.I am currently leading a project to develop a novel immunotherapy for patients suffering from Graft Versus Host Disease and other autoimmune conditions. This technology will enable penetration into a $300M global market and deliver therapy to more patients in need.Previously designed and developed a novel pathogen reduction platform, capable of optically reducing bloodborne pathogens prior to transfusion. Compared to existing products, this technology offers: over 100X better pathogen reduction, 5X faster treatment time and overall increased blood product quality. Developed multiple iterations of prototype optical system architectures and disposable treatment sets, including all laboratory blood work to profile bloodborne pathogen reduction.In 20••••19 I also led a team of graduate students to develop a new device to acoustically detect misloads in apheresis centrifuges, a prevalent issue that impacts patient experience during apheresis treatments. The project proved to be a success and the technology was able to successfully detect misloads with very high reliability.
