About Jeremy Fine
As an MD-PhD candidate and NIMH Research Fellow at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, I am passionate about transforming mental health systems through evidence-based innovation and lived-experience advocacy. My work bridges research, policy, and practice to create scalable, data-driven solutions that improve outcomes for individuals in crisis. Currently in the fifth year of my program, I have completed multiple clinical rotations, including Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and OB-Gyn, which have deepened my understanding of the complexities of patient care.Pursuing a PhD in Health Policy and Management, I specialize in designing evidence-based strategies that integrate stakeholder engagement with cutting-edge systems science methods to optimize behavioral health systems. I led the development of North Carolina’s evaluation plan for its upcoming Non-Law Enforcement Transport Program and am advancing system dynamics simulation models to address psychiatric bed shortages across the U.S. My goal is to understand current and ideal systems by amplifying the voices of service users and stakeholders, using these insights to build data-driven models that enhance care quality. Throughout, I remain committed to fostering voluntary, safe, effective, and equitable care.Beyond research and consulting, I am deeply committed to reducing stigma and fostering understanding through advocacy. As an Ending the Silence speaker and program coordinator for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), I share my lived experience with mental illness with children and communities in both English and Spanish. These experiences shape my vision of becoming a psychiatrist who is truly person-centered, building meaningful relationships by focusing on people rather than pathologies.Looking ahead, I aim to consult with health systems, payers, and crisis system administrators to create data-driven decision-support tools that enhance data collection and drive performance improvement in mental health crisis systems. I believe these tools will pave the way for more effective and equitable mental health services.Let’s connect to collaborate on driving data-driven innovation in mental health systems and creating a world where compassionate, integrated care is the norm.

Ending the Silence Speaker and Program Coordinator
Sep 2019 — Present · Chicago, NC
I deliver educational presentations to middle and high school students, teachers, and community groups as part of NAMI’s Ending the Silence program, reducing stigma and increasing awareness about mental health conditions. Drawing from my own lived experience with mental illness, I educate audiences about warning signs of mental health challenges, positive coping strategies, and suicide prevention in both English and Spanish. As a Program Coordinator, I also recruit, train, and manage a team of volunteers to expand the reach of Ending the Silence in schools and organizations across Wake County. This role has allowed me to combine public speaking, community outreach, and advocacy to create meaningful change in mental health education.
