About Jenny Hottle

I\'m a product designer at The New York Times, where I\'ve spent the past eight years designing internal tools for journalists and reimagining editorial workflows. My work at The Times has unlocked access to millions of images in our archive, enabled our journalists around the world to coordinate coverage and reshaped how the newsroom publishes highly engaging stories at the speed of news. On any given day, I’m collaborating across the business and newsroom — devising product visions with stakeholders, pairing with engineers on accessibility or testing new user flows with editors. I lead with empathy and love mentoring junior designers as they find their footing. I’ve helped designers develop advanced Figma skills, adapt UX research methods for our newsroom and level up their careers. Prior to joining The Times, I designed onboarding flows and fraud protection features as a UX designer at Capital One. There, I learned how to ship fast in agile environments and how to run collaborative design sprints. I studied journalism at the University of Maryland and set out to become a reporter, but a user-centered design elective changed everything and led to my pursuit of a master’s degree in human-computer interaction. During grad school, I worked in public affairs at NASA Goddard’s Space Flight Center, a job I initially took to afford my degree. But it turned out to be so much more than any old job. In the Office of Communications, I found brilliant mentors who encouraged me to embrace curiosity and go deep on creative ideas. That’s a mindset I carry into my work today as I continue to learn, explore and grow as a designer. Outside of work, I love learning, especially when it comes to trying a new sport or craft. I’ve been developing my backhand in tennis and trying my hand at gouache painting. I also enjoy hosting friends for dinner with my partner, watching too much baseball, petting every dog I pass on the street and using my internet sleuthing skills to solve mysteries for friends.
