ABOUT JENNIFER F. HUMBER

With over 20 years of experience within higher education, I have been responsible for providing direction and leadership to various academic departments regarding student service initiatives, which included areas of advising, retention, recruitment, orientation, freshman year experience, and student organizations. As a qualitative researcher, I seek to better understand student engagement as defined by students. I am especially interested in student perceptions of engagement within an online learning environment. I have a passion for advising, teaching, and assisting students as they pursue their academic goals. As an Assistant Professor within the Department of Consumer Sciences, I currently teach undergraduate and graduate courses in both a traditional face-to-face classroom setting, as well as in a virtual learning environment. I also serve as Director of the Graduate Certificate in Conflict Resolution. This 15-credit hour non-degree certificate program teaches ways to manage consumer, workplace, and personal conflict through the use of effective communication, emotional intelligence skills, and collaborative problem solving. From a foundation in conflict theory, students learn strategies to prevent, reduce, and resolve conflict with the goal of preserving, and in many cases improving, relationships. All 15 hours required for the certificate are offered online and may be applied toward a the 30-hour Master of Science in Human Environmental Sciences.
