My practice focuses on appellate and complex civil litigation, with a particular emphasis on patent cases including Federal Circuit appeals and patent trials in numerous district courts.In 2016, I was a member of the trial team that achieved the record-breaking patent infringement verdict for Idenix Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Merck & Co.), the largest infringement verdict in U.S. history. After a two-week trial, the jury ordered Gilead Sciences to pay $2.54 billion in damages for sales of sofosbuvir-based medicines, including Sovaldi and Harvoni, for its infringement of an Idenix patent related to the treatment of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.Other recent engagements include district court and Federal Circuit litigation on behalf of Purdue Pharma in Hatch-Waxman patent infringement actions regarding generic versions of OxyContin®, a widely prescribed treatment for pain relief, and successfully defending Celgene Corporation regarding drugs used to treat cancer.I also maintain an active pro bono practice. I was a member of the team recognized in 2016 by the Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appeals Project (DV LEAP) for our representation in a child custody dispute, and I successfully argued before the Fourth Circuit in a groundbreaking case on asylum law regarding persecution based on a particular social group. I am also involved in Firm recruiting and mentoring efforts, including serving on the Washington Office Recruiting Committee.
