Ms. Nijman is experienced in litigation defense and enforcement issues, including- common law liability and toxic tort - private cost recovery - the Clean Air Act - the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and underground storage tanks - CERCLA and the Superfund process. She defended a waste company against plaintiffs claiming property damage under common law theories, resulting in a jury verdict for the defense after a seven week jury trial. Her practice includes representing clients at permit and siting proceedings, in regulatory disputes, and in negotiations with both state and federal agencies. Ms. Nijman also work with clients in compliance matters, site remediations and transactions involving contaminated sites. She is a certified mediator through the Center for Conflict Resolution and an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. She served as President of the Chicago Bar Association in 2002–2003.
