At the core of the Kendore Learning Foundation’s mission is the belief that every student will benefit from good reading instruction and should have equal access to it. Many students perform below their potential or do not achieve literacy solely because of financial hardship, social stresses and/or a poor learning environment. The Kendore Learning Foundation seeks to change that by offering scholarships to teachers for training and to students in need of tutoring. Kendore Learning has a history of providing scholarships to struggling readers who could not otherwise afford tutoring. Our therapists have achieved great success with many of these students, raising their reading skills to those of their peers (and sometimes above) and boosting their self-esteem. In addition to providing more scholarships for one-on-one tutoring, the Kendore Learning Foundation hopes to identify low-performing schools, target students in need of reading remediation, and implement individualized plans for those students. Centennial Elementary and Intown Academy in Atlanta, Georgia served as recent models for this approach. At both schools many students made the kind of progress in months that would have otherwise taken years in a traditional classroom setting.
