About Jennifer Estrellado
My interest in pharmacy began when I was very young. By the time I was 10 years old, I had already had pneumonia several times. I constantly fell ill and took various medications to relieve and eliminate my illness. When I was not sick, I had to take separate medication as preventative measures. I learned at a very young age the importance of medication. A majority of my time spent at the doctors were waiting for medications in the pharmacy. The more time I spent waiting in the pharmacy, the more my interest grew; I would constantly try and peek into the back as much as I could trying to see all that happened. I was so curious as to how a pharmacy operated; I wanted to work inside one. Being a young child, waiting in a pharmacy for 20 minutes felt like an hour. It was during these waiting times that I decided I wanted to become a pharmacist in order to deliver medicine faster ultimately allowing people to feel better quicker. Now that I am a fourth year student pharmacist, my reason for becoming a pharmacist has evolved. I want to be a pharmacist in order to not only make a difference in patient\'s lives but make a difference in pharmacy as well. I have learned the importance of our role as being one of the most accessible healthcare professionals and I want to help all those who are in need and provide them with the resources to live a healthy life. I know a lot of this would not be possible without the support of legislators. I have volunteered, shadowed, taken up leadership positions, and attended conferences. Through these opportunities, I\'ve learned the importance of advocating for our profession to ultimately give the best care to our patients. I believe as student pharmacists, our voices can be amplified to make a change for our future and our patients by getting involved and speaking to our state representatives. Currently, I am a pharmacy intern at UF Health Shands where I complete non-sterile compounding and deliver medications. I also recently have been working on safety and quality improvement projects for the pharmacy department. In these projects, I have been ensuring that our areas are compliant for The Joint Commission inspections, analyzing data for diabetic patients experiencing hypoglycemic events, and analyzing patients being initiated on warfarin at our hospital. With this position I hope to aid the pharmacy department in finding solutions to common problems in our department and with our patients.
