ABOUT JENNIFER CARTER
I am inspired to adapt processes across conventional technical silos by collaborating with domain specialists to tackle societal challenges. I am motivated to lead by enabling others to succeed in their careers and find their own potential for happiness and fulfillment.My research focuses on engineering agnostic experimental approaches/processes to solve the disparate manufacturing and design challenges of interface-rich materials. We innovate and collaborate with domain specialists to translate problem-solving methodologies between seemingly unconnected silos of thought with the goal of understanding the physical mechanisms of microstructural evolution. This understanding informs the design of processing routes to improve application performance and positively impact society. This research builds on my career quantifying the correlative relationships between metrics of defect evolution (e.g, grain/particle size, texture, composition) and metrics of performance (e.g, creep rate, fatigue life, environmental degradation) of metals utilizing experimental approaches. Early in my career, I saw the advantage of translating data science approaches used for materials discovery and functional materials and devices to the design of manufacturing routes and materials for long-lived structural applications in energy applications.
