About Jenni McDermott
I currently work as an Industrial Hygienist at 3M. I conduct Industrial Hygiene Sampling to test for various toxicants. I Review job procedures and task training to ensure they are in compliance with OSHA. Find solutions to mitigate potential hazards by implementing engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls. Identify and monitor chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards by performing safety inspections and audits. Create reports outlining the industrial hygiene samples and interpret analytical data from the sampling results to identify and mitigate health hazards. I reduce spending by improving site safety. At Kinross, I had experience directing several large projects to improve safety and cost savings. One of the projects is improving the health and safety of Bald Mountains Lab employees. I have been working closely with Process Management to find viable solutions to reduce toxic lead exposure to the lab employees. I proposed the plan to eliminate the use of lead by substituting it with Bismuth, a non-toxic metal. This change would greatly improve the health of the lab employees as well as generate significant annual cost savings. This plan was approved and I have played an active role in its implantation. Another project I have directed was reducing process plant employees\' toxic exposure to Hydrogen Cyanide. Since the construction of the Vantage plant, there has been elevated Hydrogen Cyanide inside the plant. This caused complications for the plant operators while trying to run plan operations. Before my involvement, there had been many attempts to identify the problem and reduce exposure. I was able to identify the root of the problem and worked closely with Process Management to plan and implement a cost-efficient solution. A project I am currently directing is improving the Bald Mountains Hearing Conservation Program. I am working to implement capabilities to provide in-house annual hearing tests. This would generate annual cost savings as well as improve site efficacy by providing flexible testing around the mine operations schedule. My current aspirations are to complete the CIH certifications as well as obtain a master’s degree in Toxicology.
